Series: How to Socially Distance

Welcome to our "How To" series! This article is brought to you by our student assistant and RA Lily.

The covid-19 pandemic has called for extreme measures to “flatten the curve” and prevent the disease from spreading further—including social distancing. The term is being emphasized throughout the media to take in practice, yet it’s critical to strictly define it so that all can practice it in their personal lives. What does social distancing mean for you? Where can you go and what can you do?

Essentially, “People should avoid gathering in public places. People should be at home as much as possible,” says, director of research at the Center for Public Health Initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania, Carolyn Cannuscio, and reportedly, “The CDC recommendations are to keep six to 10 feet away from other people.” The article experts in, The Dos and Don’ts of ‘Social Distancing’ also recommend to cancel events and, “Dating, family visits, house parties, should all be postponed or held virtually if possible.” Meanwhile if you “Wash your hands; avoid touching your face… routinely disinfect” and keep “practicing good hygiene” you will increase your chance of staying safe. Maintaining “our mental and physical health,” with “fresh air, nature, and exercise” are “really important,” thus, going outside for a walk or workout, while maintaining appropriate distance with others, is acceptable but going to the gym is not.

Additionally, experts advise to “shop at times when there are very few other shoppers there,” avoid public transportation if possible, “limiting visitation to people who are in assisted-living facilities and nursing homes,” and canceling “nonessential appointments.” If you are mandated to be on a strict 14-day quarantine, experts emphasize that contact with anyone is prohibited, you may not leave your space at all unless it’s perhaps in an open and isolated area and it is necessary for those assisting you to take precautious measures.

Social distancing recommendations are not to be taken lightly as they are essential for the effort to combat the virus from spreading any further. At a time like this, we must do what we each can to follow expert instructions and avoid social interaction as much as possible.
